[Case Study] Oil Smoke Control in Quenching and Tempering Furnaces

An example where the working environment has improved, resulting in workers inhaling less oil smoke.

The blade manufacturing company M has about 10 quenching and tempering furnaces, which caused the factory to be in a state where the other side could not be seen due to the oil smoke. Previously, a fan was used to create airflow from behind the workers to prevent them from inhaling the oil smoke. However, when the indoor space became filled with oil smoke, the fan only ended up blowing more oil smoke into the area, rendering it ineffective. Therefore, we implemented local exhaust for the oil smoke from the quenching and tempering furnaces. An electric dust collector was installed at the discharge port of the automatic quenching furnace. Additionally, hoods were installed near the oil tank and sawdust tank used for quenching and tempering. Ultimately, electric dust collectors were introduced for the seven furnaces that produced a significant amount of oil smoke. Wet-type electric dust collector for industrial waste treatment, high performance and energy-saving type.

Wet-type electrostatic precipitator energy-saving measures (IGBT method)

IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) has recently garnered attention as a power semiconductor device for power control, serving as an alternative to traditional thyristors. IGBTs combine high-speed switching performance with excellent power control capabilities, making them widely used in various fields, from household appliances to industrial equipment and renewable energy systems. Our company was the first in Japan to adopt IGBT-based high-voltage power supplies in electric dust collectors. This has achieved significant energy savings compared to conventional methods, reducing power consumption during operation and contributing to lower CO₂ emissions. Our electric dust collector adopts constant voltage control to achieve high dust collection efficiency. In conventional power-saving control, sufficient energy-saving effects could not be obtained during operation with low gas load. However, we have successfully developed an improved power-saving control that captures the characteristics of the electric dust collector, significantly enhancing energy-saving effects compared to conventional methods.
